Welcome to UConn Taiko

UConn Taiko is a traditional Japanese drumming group based at the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus. The group was started in 2004 by Richard Fu and Cien Kim. We practice in the Music Building every Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30 during the fall and spring semesters; feel free to stop by and join in. No previous experience is required to join, just stop by or email us if interested. Although we do perform often, we try to focus on practicing drills, perfecting forms, and learning about Japanese culture as much as possible.

News

Finals are all done, grades are in, and the spring semester has officially come to an end. We would like to congratulate all the graduating seniors of the class of 2011, especially those who will be leaving UConn Taiko. You’ll always be welcome back!

We will be practicing and performing periodically throughout the summer, at a few venues including Pratt and Whitney’s Asian Heritage Month, Hartford Dragon Boat Races, and Candlewood Lake Dragon Boat Races.

We’re starting to look for new members for next year. Our first two practices will be on Thursday, September 8th from 7:30 to 9:30 and Saturday, September 10th from 1:00 to 3:00. We recommend coming to at least one, if not both of these practices. If you would like to come to one of our practices before then to see what we’re all about, just send us an email (uconntaiko[at]gmail.com) and we’ll let you know when the next one is. No experience is necessary to join, just a drive to learn and practice.

We’ll be holding a “taiko camp” on the weekend of September 17th, where we will be working on everything from basic form, to taiko history, and learning a song or two. This will be a longer practice, which will probably include lunch. We recommend that everyone interested come to this practice as it will form the foundation for the rest of the year. If you’re interested but can’t make it, just let us know and we can get you up to speed. So, feel free to check out the website, our youtube, and our flickr  to see what we do, and send us an email if you have any questions.
