The UConn Triathlon Team is a way to bring together members of the UConn community who are interested in racing triathlons.  We will train together to compete in the Northeast Collegiate Triathlon Conference and nearby races.

Triathlon Club History:
In the summer of 2010, Sam Murphy asked UConn's running club if anyone was interested in starting a triathlon club. Ben Cyr, having done many triathlons in the past and had just registered for an IronMan, quickly jumped on the bandwagon. They began planning for the next year and tried to figure out how to successfully make a team. They recruited more officers and members, gaining the support of about 10 for the first semester. They knew it would be a building year and not much would happen right away, but they became friends and trained during the fall semester.

Two things happened the next semester to kick-start the team. The first was Katery Hyatt making the triathlon team's first webpage, giving a face to the team and allowing outside people to learn more about the new club. The second was being given permission to participate in the involvement fair to help recruit and gain members. In finding a few triathlons to train for, triathlon team was well underway.

In October of 2011, we competed in our first race as a team. Six of our members participated in the race, and all six finished in the top three of their divisions. We took first and third place in men age 20-24yr division; first and third place in women age 19yr and under division; first place in women age 20-24yr division; and third place in the aquathon (swim + run).

In January of 2012, the UConn Triathlon Team became an official USAT (USA Triathlon) Club and a member of the NECTC (Northeastern Collegiate Triathlon Conference). Furthermore, in March 2012 the Club Sport Council approved the team’s status as an official University Club Sport. Seeing as the NCAA does not govern collegiate triathlon competition, the club level is the highest level of competition. As members of USAT—our governing body, and NECTC—our regional conference, we now race other university teams and, at the championship level, go up against the top collegiate triathlon teams in the nation.

In April of 2012, the UConn Triathlon Team competed at the USAT (USA Triathlon) Collegiate National Championship in Tuscaloosa, AL. The National Championship is the premier event for a collegiate triathlete. It is a well-organized and well-run event at which we have the opportunity to compete against outstanding colleges from all around the country. This race was a blast, and the team plans to train hard to qualify for the 2013 National Championship!

What is a triathlon?

A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event consisting of swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time, including timed "transitions" between the individual swim, bike, and run components. (wikipedia)
